WTF: Australian pastor claims gay people reproduce "by molesting children"

"I'm convinced that homosexuals (re)produces themselves by molesting children," he told the 200-strong crowd.

He said marriage should be a strong institution between a man and a woman, with the purpose of bearing children.

"In the absence of this biological principle, sex becomes very instrumental, the satisfaction of pleasure and, I'll say it straight out, lust," Pastor Walker said.

It's far too early in the morning, and my brain is far too full of wedding planning, to even begin to respond to this.

Divide and Conquer: Cracking MS-CHAPv2 with a 100% success rate

Moxie Marlinspike has written up an overview of his and David Hulton’s presentation at Defcon 20 last week: Divide and Conquer: Cracking MS-CHAPv2 with a 100% success rate.

The key takeaways:

  • Reduces the complexity of attacking MS-CHAPv2 to 2^56 (significantly smaller than attempting to brute-force the user’s password)
  • Using FPGA’s, they have achieved “a worst case of ~23 hours … and an average case of about half a day” to crack any given MS-CHAPv2 handshake
  • chapcrack automagically extracts the information needed to crack MS-CHAPv2 handshakes from packet dumps, giving you a “token” to use with the CloudCracker Cracking-as-a-Service platform, opening this attack up to anyone
  • “All users and providers of PPTP VPN solutions should immediately start migrating to a different VPN protocol. PPTP traffic should be considered unencrypted.”

Yikes.

Notch on Gender in Minecraft

Notch on Gender in Minecraft:

The human model is intended to represent a Human Being. Not a male Human Being or a female Human Being, but simply a Human Being. The blocky shape gives it a bit of a traditional masculine look, but adding a separate female mesh would just make it worse by having one specific model for female Human Beings and male ones. That would force players to make a decisions about gender in a game where gender doesn’t even exist.

A tissue-engineered jellyfish with biomimetic propulsion

A tissue-engineered jellyfish with biomimetic propulsion
or, Engineer Am Play Gods.

We report the construction of a freely swimming jellyfish from chemically dissociated rat tissue and silicone polymer as a proof of concept. The constructs, termed 'medusoids', were designed with computer simulations and experiments to match key determinants of jellyfish propulsion and feeding performance by quantitatively mimicking structural design, stroke kinematics and animal-fluid interactions.

Setting up a Personal Wiki in Drupal - a "tutorial"

I’ve been looking for a good wiki engine to use for my own personal wiki for a while now - I’ve tried TikiWiki, MediaWiki, DokuWiki, TiddlyWiki and more. I have used, and continue to use, WorkFlowy to keep track of notes, daily logs and random ideas; while I find it great for short, one-line notes, I’ve never felt comfortable using it for longer writing.

Rather than try another wiki solution, I decided I’d use it as an excuse to get further to grips with the incredible flexibility provided by Drupal and the Drupal community and roll my own Drupal wiki. Check out below the cut for more information on how I did it.

Catch-22: Tech Blogging As a Woman

Catch-22: Tech Blogging As a Woman

The catch-22 here is that if I choose to blend in, then people like the commenters above assume that everything they see was written by men, and use that as an excuse to dismiss the concerns of women in the tech industry – because apparently, we don’t contribute and thus don’t matter. If I choose to not blend in, I’m dismissed as bringing up gender when it’s irrelevant (or worse, harassed by people who’ve decided gender is relevant).
